Drugs, Substances & Smoking

While you're young, you want to try new experiences, which could include smoking and drugs (a drug is anything that changes the way you think, feel or act). It's normal to want to try new things even if you know they are bad for you. You learn from mistakes, and it's all part of growing up.

If you start smoking, it could be because you're stressed at school. You may try drugs such as cannabis because your friends are. But, if you know how these affect you, you should be able to make a good choice for yourself.

The type and amount of a certain drug, how you're feeling, where you are and who you are with will determine the effect of the drug itself.

If you smoke, your skin can prematurely age by between 10 and 20 years and although the damaging effects of cigarette smoke on the skin are irreversible, further deterioration can be avoided by stopping.

GUIDEDid you know...?

  • Drugs affect people differently. However, they can all harm your body and change the way your mind works so that you don't have so much control of yourself.
  • Smoking can lead to cancer and heart disease
  • Solvents (things people sniff like glue or gas lighters) can cause vomiting, heart problems, blackouts, and even instant death
  • Some people can become dependent on drugs (including alcohol and cigarettes) if they are using them often and regularly)
  • No drug is safe

GUIDE Are you worried about a friend or sibling?

  • Sometimes people may not realised they have a problem. To help, inform yourself othe facts and talk to your local service for advice.
  • You can't force someone to change - they'll have to want to do it themselves, and you can't do it for them.

GUIDEAre You Worried About What You Are Taking?

  • Ask yourself - "Am I doing it because my friends are?"
  • It takes guts to say no when you are offered drugs, but people will think more of you if you make your own choice rather than fitting into the crowd.
