Drinking

Most people say they drink alcohol because it makes them feel more confident and happy. But alcohol has many downsides, such as

  • Gives you hangovers
  • Makes you tired
  • Makes you dehydrated
  • Can make you depressed
  • Can lead to other things which you may regret, such as unprotected sex (sex without protection, such as a condom)

Many people enjoy a drink without causing any problems, but you can get addicted to it, which means you start relying on it.

GUIDEHow much is too much?
Do you know your limit?

  • A unit is half pint of beer, or a single measure of spirits
  • If you're male and over 18 the safe recommended limits are no more than 3-4 units a day, but not every day; and no more than 28 units a week
  • If you're female and over 18 the safe recommended limits are no more than 2-3 units a day, but not every day; and no more than 21 units in a week
  • When you drink more than this in one day, it's called binge drinking, and this is bad for your health.

GUIDE Are you worried about a friend or sibling?

  • Sometimes people may not realise they have a problem. To help, inform yourself of the facts and talk to your friend. You can also talk to your local service for advice (you can find a list of services throughout our site)
  • Remember that they have to want to chaneg their habits - you can't do it for them!

GUIDE Are you drinking too much?

  • Do you drink because of problems at home or school? You don't need to rely on alcohol to solve your problems. There are people you can talk to and they can advise you.
  • Are you drinking because your friends drink a lot? It can be hard to do things differently from your friends, but people will respect you more for it.
