Truancy

It's not unusual to have a day where you don't feel like going to school - everybody has these days! If you decide not to go to school, or attend lessons you should it's known as 'truancy'. You might think that missing one lesson won't matter, but that one lesson can make a big difference and it's still truanting.

People truant for lots of different reasons:

  • You're not doing well
  • You haven't done your homework
  • You do it because your friends are
  • You're being bullied
  • Or you feel bored


GUIDE Missing too much school is bad, because...

 

 - You will fall behind in important lessons
 - You'll miss out on being with friends
 - It can be hard to catch up - it means more work
 - You may miss important topics for your exams


GUIDE Are you worried about a friend or sibling?

- Do you someone who's truanting?
- Don't feel pressurised by them to truant
- Try and persuade them to talk to someone about it and why they're doing it

 - They'll want to find out why you're doing it
 - Your school will want to talk to your parents / carers
