Bullying

Bullying can be in many forms. It often happens in schools and be things like name calling, hitting, 'happy slapping', or stealing from someone. It can also include things less visible, like sending nasty text messages or spreading false rumours about someone.

There are many reasons why someone may be picked on. It can make you feel dreadful, and you may not even want to go to school. You may feel down or depressed, lonely or even suicidal.

If you are being bullied, you are not alone, every seven seconds another young person in Britain is going through it too. You may feel that there's no way out, but there are lots of ways to get help. Remember, it's not your fault and you have the right to live without being picked on.

  • The person suddenly become unhappy or withdrawn
  • They may start missing school
  • They got physical injuries or bruises they don't want to talk about.

  • Take their worries seriously
  • Stick up for them and stand by them if they are being picked on. It will help their confidence.
  • They may want you to be with them when they tell someone.

  • Remember – it’s not your fault
  • They bullying probably won't stop until you tell someone you can trust such as a friend, parent or carer, or a teacher.
  • Act confidently to send out the message they you're not afraid
  • Stay with others - you are more likely to be picked on if you're on your own.
  • Keep a diary and keep all text messages as evidence of what happens. You can use them at a later date to show you're telling the truth.
