We also offer the ‘PACT’ Programme – ‘Parents And Carers Training’. It is a skills-based counselling approach working one-to-one with a PACT counsellor. It is designed to help those concerned about a loved one’s drug or alcohol use, so long as the concerned other is in close contact with their loved one. PACT recognises the important contributions and influences that family members can make whilst at the same time meeting their own needs. It can help them make changes for the better.
The primary goals of PACT aim to:
-
Help the loved one into treatment
-
Help to reduce the stress of the concerned other
-
Improve the quality of life of the concerned other (regardless of whether their loved one changes)
How does PACT work?
Whilst drug and alcohol-related problems appear relentless, use is affected by the environment the loved one is in (i.e. what’s going on around them, relationships they have). This is not to say that the family member is to blame for these problems, but it does mean that they can influence the loved one’s environment (how they interact and respond to the loved one’s behaviour). In doing so, they can make alcohol and drug consumption less appealing and create more rewarding alternatives. This can have a powerful affect on their loved one’s behaviour without resorting to conflict.
