Genito Urinary Medicine (GUM)
The Department of Genito Urinary Medicine is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital (01633 234234) with a satellite provision at Cwmbran Town Centre Clinic.
The Department provides a screening service for all sexually transmitted infections as well as health promotion and education.
It enjoys well established inter-departmental links within the Health Board especially obstetrics and gynaecology, and acute medicine with the provision of shared care.
The service is led by Dr Robert Das (Consultant), who is based at the Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport, and holds one session per week at the Cwmbran Town Centre Clinic.
The Department offers a comprehensive service to diagnose and treat all sexually transmissible infections with an in-house laboratory currently run by nurses trained in microbiology.
Links with urology and dermatology are in place where patients with the above problems often present and vice versa.
The Department provides a contact tracing/partner notification service and in addition, a variety of counselling sessions are offered. These include:
- Pre and post test HIV information
- Ongoing counselling of patients with various stages of HIV infection and their carers
- Emergency contraception is provided free of charge during clinic hours
- A telephone helpline 01633 234555
