Internet Safety

If you, or someone you know is being cyber bullied, or someone is lying about who they are, use the report abuse button at the bottom of this page.

Cyber Bullying

What is cyber bullying? Well, cyber bullying is when someone is being bullied on the Internet, by text, through blogs, on social networking sites, in online games or anything similar.

There is a web site called "ThinkUNo", which will help you stay on your toes about what you are doing online.

Take a look here. Don't leave it until it's too late!

Chat Rooms

How to stay safe in chatrooms:

  • Don't use your real name or lie about your age.
  • Don't give out your email address, mobile number, home address or school address or post your photo in a chatroom.
  • Use public chatrooms, not private where there are only two people.
  • Don’t agree to meet anyone you’ve met in a chatroom unless you can take one of your parents/carers
  • If you think someone in a chatroom is lying about who they are, email the person who’s in charge of the chatroom, or visit "REPORT ABUSE" at the bottom of this page
  • Warn your friends.
  • Don’t use that chatroom again.
  • Let a parent or guardian know if you think you are in danger

Is your friend in danger?

  • Tell them not to meet up with anyone they have met in a chatroom.
  • Tell them not to give out personal details.
  • Support them and encourage them to tell someone about what is happening.

“The Internet is a great place, but it can also mean new risks.”

Information can now come to us in many e-forms like pop-ups, blogs, email, text or via the internet. These can be anonymous. The Internet is great but it needs to be treated with care.

Some adults go to young people’s chatrooms and pretend to be a young person because they want to meet young people on their own to have sex with them, or sexually abuse them. These people are called pedophiles and they are very dangerous.

If you do want to meet up with someone you've met online, make sure that you discuss it with your parents beforehand and that you take an adult with you. Social networks are a great way of keeping in touch but remember that:

  • Your page is still a public place and anyone can read it.
  • You can never be sure that other users are being truthful about who they are.
  • Think about whether you know someone well enough before accepting someone into your group of linked friends.
  • Make sure you know who to contact to report abuse or bullying on your page.

Texting is a great way to chat to friends, but it can be used as a way to bully people. Tell an adult you trust if you are getting text messages, which make you feel scared or uncomfortable.

Remember, no matter what web site it was, come back here and click "Report Abuse" at the bottom of any page.
