Reach The Heights (The Mix)

What is The Mix?

The Mix is a Youth Music Programme created for young people that are not currently in Education, Employment or Training.

We offer a variety of music projects from African drumming and singing to Rock Schools, DJ-ing and creating your own ringtones.  They are all designed to give the participant new skill sets and the ambition to change in a positive way that will increase their prospects for engaging in future learning and in employment.

Who is it for?

The Mix is aimed at Young People aged between 11 – 19.  We are targeting those that are currently not in Education, Employment or Training.

How does it work?

We provide an initial session, which introduces young people to the different activities we have on offer.  They will last up to two hours and are designed to be motivational sessions for the young people.  At the end of the initial session they are then encouraged to sign up to one of our Sustained Activities.

The sustained activities are usually courses running up to twelve weeks.  However there are also shorter and more intensive courses such as 3-day rock schools and 5-day music tech/ringtones projects.  The participant will be given a more sustained musical experience, which will equip them with new skills and confidence to go on to further Education of Employment.

Where are the projects?

The projects will take place in locations across four different counties; Merthyr Tydfil, Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly and Torfaen.  The activities will be based in youth based centres across the counties.

When are they?

We are running 50 projects over the course of December 09 – March 2011.  This means that there is something on offer for everyone and at anytime.

How much will it cost?

The courses are free of charge to the clients and equipment will be provided where necessary.

Who runs it?

The overall programme is run by Yo!Maz a youth music service provider and Head4Arts a community arts organisation for the Heads of the Valleys.  The project will be led by experienced and CRB-checked community music tutors with a track record of success with ‘difficult to reach’ groups.
