Designed To Smile

The Designed to Smile daily toothbrushing programme is a major initiative aimed at helping to improve the health of young children's teeth in Wales.

A free toothbrush and toothpaste is give to each child in a home page. This is to encourage your child to brush in the morning and before bedtime at home. We also want to encourage children to brush their teeth once a day at nursery or school. Evidence shows regular use of fluoride-containing toothpaste helps reduce the need for fillings and extractions.

Each nursery or school programme is organised in a safe and effective way. There is a designated lead person in each school/nursery who is responsiblee for the toothbrushing programme.

Staff are given a detailed training programme and monitoring checks are carried out at least once a term against national standards of best practice.

Parents/guardians' consent is obtained before the child enteres the programme, and records are kept and regularly updated.
