Top Tips for Parents

  1. Tell children they should never give out personal information.
Explain that children should: NEVER give out personal information (name, address, phone, school name), NEVER meet anyone from online without your permission, NEVER open emails from unknown senders, and NEVER share their photo with strangers over the Internet. Shared photos are an easy way for a predator to find a child or modify your child’s image for pornographic use.
  2. Computers are best placed in open areas and out of children's bedrooms.
With PCs in the open, children will be less inclined to view and access material that may not be acceptable.
  3. Report abuse
Talk to children about not responding to offensive or dangerous e-mail, chat, or other communications. Report any such communication to local law enforcement. Do not delete the offensive or dangerous e-mail; turn off the monitor. Show them
how to turn off the monitor and emphasize that it's not their fault if they see something upsetting. CEOPS have a report abuse button that can be accessed through their site and all suspicions should be sent to them http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/

There's also a 'Report Abuse' button at the bottom of each page on 01495info.com. Teach your children how to use them in case they need to.
  4. Set up filters on your computer
Have you set up filters on your computer, please contact your internet provider for advice on how to set up filters and protect your children from sites that will upset them.

BUT BY FAR THE MOST IMPORTANT ADVICE IS
  5. Create a relationship with children that encourages them to talk to you if they are upset.
Open communication and trust is extremely valuable. By letting children know what is expected from them and that their safety is a top priority, they will feel that if something happens they can approach a parent to resolve the issue without
feeling they are in trouble. In all internet safety training children are encouraged to talk to parents if they are upset by anything they experience so it is essential that children feel confident to talk to you about any concern.
